Pikey Peak Cultural Trek is a newly opened teahouse trekking route in the lower section of the Everest region. It is a remote area where you meet a few trekkers en route. It is also a culturally rich trekking area where you can see ancient Buddhist monasteries, Mani walls, Stupas, temples, and Hindu pilgrimage places on the trek. It offers majestic views of Mt. Everest, Kanchenjunga, Makalu, Ama Dablam, Mera Peak, Gauri Shankar, and Numbur Himal to the North and deep valleys dropping away into the clouds to the South from Pikey Peak. You can enjoy the breathtaking sunrise and Sunset views from Pikey Peak at elevation 4067m.

Sir Edmund Hillary said it is his favorite view of Mt. Everest (8848m) from Pikey Peak at elevation 4067m. We agree with him. The Sherpas believe that their clan god is living at Pikey Peak, where the locals get to gather to worship and pray during July. Dudh Kunda is a sacred Lake in the Base Camp of the mountain Numbur Himal. The Shaman dance festival celebrates at the Lake on the full moon of August each year.

We visit Thupten Choling Monastery in Junebesi. His Holiness Trulsik Rinpoche found it in the 1960s after fleeing Tibet. It is an independent and autonomous institution. Consequently, Thupten Choling has remained authentically traditional and hidden from the outside world. Around 300 monks live there.

Five different types of Rhododendrons bloom in the forest from April to May. This trek is also rich in Himalayan flora and fauna. You could see yaks grazing around Pikey Peak.

The Pikey Peak Cultural Trek begins with a bus ride from Kathmandu to Bhumdi Bandar. Then, the trek to Pikey Peak is lined with villages, ancient Buddhist monasteries, and breathtaking views of Himalayan scenery. The trek ends at Phaplu-Saleri and travels to Kathmandu by flight or bus. It’s a bus drive in the scenic hilly region from Phaplu to Kathmandu. Tara and Summit Air fly directly from Kathmandu to Phaplu Airpot twice weekly.

Today is the longest trek day, with mixed down and uphill walking. We descend to Likhu Khola (River) in the morning. The Likhu Khola is at the border of Ramechhap and Solu-Khumbu district - the home of the Sherpa ethnic and Mt. Everest. After crossing the river, we ascend to Chaula Kharka, where we take an hour-long break for lunch. From here, we continue to climb to Gomba Danda through villages and Rhododendron trees. There are two monasteries at Gomba Danda, which will be visited upon arrival.

Leaving Gomba Danda village, we ascend through the Rhododendron forest toward Ngaur (3350m), which has a teashop, a Nepal Government-owned Yak cheese factory, and a monastery. We head up to Pikey Peak viewpoint at 5:00 AM. From Base Camp, it's a gradual uphill walk to reach Pikey Peak in an hour. After breakfast, we ascend through the ridge toward Lamajura. We could see close views of Mt. Numbur Himal (6969m) and Mt. Everest before the short-cut trail branch of Taktor village through the dense forest of fire birch, pine, and rhododendrons. We pass the Sherpa villages and monasteries en route and see the daily life of Sherpas from Taktor to Junbesi village. We take a tour of monasteries, Stupas, and schools in Junbesi, a typical Sherpa village.

Includes: Accommodation at the teahouse, breakfast, lunch, and dinner with tea or coffee.
After breakfast, a two-hour gradual uphill walk leads us to Thupten Choling monastery, which Trulisik Rinpoche founded in the 1960s after fleeing Tibet. Now, it is an institution of 700 monks and nuns (80% of whom are Tibetan refugees). His Holiness is very precious; he is one of the Dalai Lama's primary teachers. We are back to Junbesi for lunch, and the afternoon is free time.

Includes: Accommodation at teahouse, breakfast, lunch, and dinner with tea or coffee.
Leaving Junbesi, we walk downhill and uphill through trekking trails and rough roads to reach Phaplu. En route, we could see Mt. Numbur Himal, Stupas, mani walks, and the daily life of locals. After lunch, we went to Saleri Bazaar, which held a Saturday market.

Includes: Breakfast and lunch, and dinner with tea or coffee.
